If Dwarka Nagari, or part of one of its ancient coastal settlements, really did go beneath the sea, what natural processes could have caused this? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In geology, several possible causes are considered for the submergence of a coastal region. However, no single cause has been scientifically established for the sinking of any specific settlement in Dwarka.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_could_the_scientific_reasons_be\"><\/span><b>What could the scientific reasons be?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sea level does not always remain the same. Throughout Earth\u2019s long geological history, coastlines have changed due to climate change, melting glaciers, changes in ocean water temperature, and shifts in land elevation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the relative sea level rises in a coastal region, land that was once dry can end up underwater. Such changes often happen gradually, although storms or other events can rapidly increase local damage. Important research has been conducted on this around Dwarka.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"31_Sea_Level_Rise_Did_rising_sea_levels_engulf_Dwarka\"><\/span><b>3.1 Sea Level Rise: Did rising sea levels engulf Dwarka?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study of archaeological evidence from Bet Dwarka was published in Current Science in 2007 under the title Shoreline Changes During the Last 2000 Years on the Saurashtra Coast of India. The researchers found that when some coastal settlements existed about two thousand years ago, the sea level may have been approximately two meters lower than it is today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This shows that the shoreline in this region has changed over time. At first, the land may have remained stable, but over time, waves may have begun to erode the soil along the shore. If erosion continues, old roads, walls, and structures connected to the port can be destroyed and fall into the sea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coastal Erosion is a relevant scientific process in a coastal region like Dwarka. But to determine the actual cause of the collapse of a particular wall or building, it is necessary to study the rocks, Sediments, and condition of the structure around it. Simply seeing stones beneath the sea is not enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"33_Tectonic_Activity_Did_the_land_sink\"><\/span><b>3.3 Tectonic Activity: Did the land sink?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earth&#8217;s outer surface is made up of different Tectonic Plates. The movement of these plates and local Faults can cause parts of the land to rise or sink. If a coastal region sinks, it can be flooded even without a major change in sea level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why Geologists also study the Vertical Movement of land when searching for ancient coastal settlements. The geological history of Kutch and the surrounding regions of Gujarat has been influenced by Tectonic Activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But an important point must be understood here. The fact that the Kutch region has a history of seismic activity does not prove that a particular earthquake submerged the city of Dwarka. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A clear connection must be established between Fault Movement, Geological Layers, and the timing of Submergence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"34_Did_a_Tsunami_destroy_Dwarka\"><\/span><b>3.4 Did a Tsunami destroy Dwarka?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Tsunami is sometimes mentioned in discussions related to Dwarka. Scientifically, a Tsunami can be caused by earthquakes beneath the sea, landslides, or other major events. Its waves can cause massive destruction in coastal areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"But_did_something_like_this_happen_to_Dwarka\"><\/span><b>But did something like this happen to Dwarka?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far, no conclusive scientific evidence is available linking a specific ancient Tsunami to the destruction of Lord Shri Krishna\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dwarka. To identify an ancient Tsunami, scientists generally look for evidence such as distinctive Sediment Deposits, Marine Microfossils, and dating. Therefore, a Tsunami can be understood as a possible natural event in the context of Dwarka, but not as an established historical cause.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"35_Could_several_natural_causes_have_been_responsible_at_once\"><\/span><b>3.5 Could several natural causes have been responsible at once?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also possible that a coastal settlement was affected not by one, but by several processes. For example, a gradual rise in relative sea level, a weakening coastline, powerful sea storms, and changes in the elevation of the land could together damage an area. In such a situation, the destruction of the city may not have been sudden, but may have occurred over a long period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in the case of Dwarka, this is a Geological Possibility, not a proven sequence of events. Bet Dwarka, located nearby, is also an important area of Marine Archaeology. Bet Dwarka is an island located near the Okha region of Gujarat. Religious traditions associate it with Lord Shri Krishna.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it also has another aspect to its historical identity. This place was a center of ancient maritime trade and human settlement in various periods.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"41_What_do_the_approximately_3500-year-old_findings_mean\"><\/span><b>4.1 What do the approximately 3500-year-old findings mean?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excavations at Bet Dwarka have uncovered archaeological remains that point to human habitation dating back approximately three and a half thousand years or more.A 2007 Current Science study analyzed the different Archaeological Layers here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of these layers belonged to the post-Harappan period, while others were associated with later historical periods. This is important because it shows that human activity was present in the Dwarka region during different periods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But finding a settlement 3500 years old and finding Lord Shri Krishna\u2019s palace are not the same thing. Its construction looks ancient. Layers of marine organisms have accumulated around it, and it appears to be thousands of years old. Can its age be determined just by looking at it? No.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Determining the age of stone structures is not always easy. The minerals in ordinary stone may be millions of years old, while a wall made from that same stone may be only a few hundred years old. Some people believe that the remains found underwater are direct evidence of Lord Krishna\u2019s capital. On the other hand, many archaeologists believe that the objects found may be associated with different historical periods. It is important to understand the difference between these two claims.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"61_What_was_S_R_Raos_view\"><\/span><b>6.1 What was S. R. Rao\u2019s view?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his early research, S. R. Rao proposed that the remains found in the Dwarka region were connected to the city described in the Mahabharata. That is why, even today, it would be more accurate to say that important evidence of ancient maritime activity and human.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Settlements from various periods has been found near Dwarka, but their identification as Lord Krishna\u2019s city of Shri Dwarka from the Mahabharata period has not been established by consensus.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_What_new_findings_have_emerged_from_the_Archaeological_Survey_of_Indias_2025%E2%80%932026_research\"><\/span><b>7. On 18 February 2025, the Ministry of Culture of the Government of India announced that the Archaeological Survey of India\u2019s Underwater Archaeology Wing had launched a new expedition near Dwarka.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this expedition, a team of archaeologists selected the marine area near Gomati Creek for an initial study. Therefore, scientists do not just photograph objects visible from above; they also study their location, surrounding materials, and potential archaeological context.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March 2025, the Ministry of Culture clarified that one objective of the campaign was to determine the antiquity of objects recovered through the analysis of Archaeological and Marine Deposits.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"72_What_was_the_situation_as_of_July_2026\"><\/span><b>7.2 What was the situation as of July 2026?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 30 July 2026, the Government of India stated in information provided to the Rajya Sabha that Underwater Research and Exploration Activities were ongoing at Dwarka and Bet Dwarka. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government also included Dwarka and Bet Dwarka among the sites designated for Underwater Exploration and Excavation by 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that scientific investigations related to Dwarka are not yet complete. But that does not mean the entire city, including its palaces, roads, and buildings, would be preserved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Structures that remain underwater for a long time are affected by ocean currents, sand, biological activity, and natural erosion. Sometimes only the foundation of an ancient building remains. In some places, a few stones may be scattered, while elsewhere an entire structure may be hidden beneath a thick layer of sand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of Dwarka too, detailed Underwater Mapping, Excavation, and Geological Analysis are needed to understand the actual situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"91_Can_future_technology_solve_mysteries\"><\/span><b>9.1 Can future technology solve mysteries?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, Underwater Archaeology uses Sonar Mapping, Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing, and other modern technologies. With their help, a detailed map of the seabed can be created and the locations of remains can be documented.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But no technology can look at a photograph of a stone and say with certainty during which king\u2019s reign it was made. For this, Archaeological Context, Scientific Dating, and independent historical evidence will continue to be needed.
